Position Overview

 

LSU Vet Med seeks a visionary Head of the Department of Pathobiological Sciences (PBS) to lead a dynamic department with strengths in microbiology, immunology, cancer biology, and pathology. PBS is nationally recognized for biomedical research and graduate education, offering MS, PhD, and DVM training, and supporting ACVP residency certification. The Head will oversee academic and research programs, faculty and staff development, and maintain an active, externally funded research program.

 

Key Responsibilities

 

Leadership & Administration

 

  • Provide strategic direction and long-term planning.
  • Oversee teaching, research, service, and outreach.
  • Manage budgets, personnel, facilities, and resources.
  • Ensure compliance with policies and foster a supportive environment.
  • Serve as liaison to the Dean.

 

Academic & Research Oversight

 

  • Support excellence in DVM and graduate education.
  • Promote faculty research productivity and funding.
  • Strengthen graduate and postgraduate training.
  • Foster interdisciplinary collaborations.

 

Faculty & Staff Development

 

  • Recruit, mentor, and evaluate faculty and staff
  • Recommend appointments, promotions, tenure, and salaries.
  • Encourage professional growth and collaboration.
  • Build and supervise effective support teams.

 

Qualifications

 

Minimum Requirements

 

  • PhD, DVM, VMD, MD, or equivalent in a biomedical discipline.

 

Preferred Qualifications

 

  • Experience in a veterinary school or health sciences center.
  • Demonstrated leadership in fiscal and personnel management.

 

Additional Expectations

 

  • Eligible for appointment as full professor and LSU Graduate Faculty.
  • Sustained record of extramural funding with active research program.
  • Strong communication, team-building, and leadership skills.
  • Commitment to education and departmental advancement.
  • Integrity, energy, resilience, transparency, and collaborative spirit.

  • Must be eligible to work in the U.S.
